ASSESSMENTS

INTRODUCTION

(Excerpts from Timothy D. Wilson, "Know Thyself", Perspectives on Psychological Studies (Vol 4, Iss 4, July 2009): 384-389).

How do people form judgments about their past, current, and future selves? What is the accuracy of these judgments? What is the cost of poor self-knowledge? How can we know ourselves better?

There are no shortage of theories about self-knowledge beginning with the grandparent of them all - psychoanalysis (threatening information is repressed from consciousness). Interest in self-knowledge spans several psychological disciplines: social, personality, cognitive, developmental, and clinical. Since the mid 1990's, the social psychological discipline has advanced the ability to test and evaluate implicit attitudes and sparked a significant growth in the interest of the area of self knowledge.

WHY DOES SELF-KNOWLEDGE MATTER?

What difference does it make whether we have any insight into the unconscious processes that are responsible for our behavior? There are very practical reasons why questions about the nature and limits of human consciousness are worth pursuing.

  • There are consequences to failing to understand ourselves. Studies have shown that poor self-insight is associated with low emotional well-being and high physiological reactivity, anxiety, self-doubt, defensiveness, and narcissism.

It is advantageous for us to discover our explicit (observable) and implicit (values) measures of self-concepts or motives. There are several ways this can be done.

  • First, we can try to be objective observers of our own behavior.
  • Second, we can try to see ourselves through the eyes of other people, at least considering the possibility that they have picked up on something about us that we have missed.
  • Third, we can try to learn about ourselves by reading and assimilating findings from psychological science.

THE VALUE OF ASSESSMENTS

Most of us pay attention to medical findings that inform us about our bodies (e.g. that smoking tobacco is harmful), and can learn about our psychological selves in the same way. Just as with medical findings, we can't always be sure that research findings based on other people apply to us but we might want to consider the possibility that they do and there is something to be gained by completing tests that measure attitudes and personality traits.
